last minute Tax Bill clears Senate

At the last minute Congress has passed the “Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2014″ that will cover or extend a few tax related items that were up in the air for 2014. One of the key items is the extension of Charitable IRA contributions that satisfy annual RMD requirements. This means that if you are over 70 1/2 and are required to take an RMD you can divert it directly to a charity and not pay any tax on the distribution (up to $100,000).

Another item is the Section 179 business owner equipment depreciation. If you have bought equipment or a vehicle in 2014, typically you would depreciate (writeoff) a certain amount over the life of that item, however the Section 179 rule allows you to expense all of it in 2014 (looks like the limit is $500,000). This could eliminate a large amount of income and therefore lower your tax bill.
